Upon completion of the last unit, you now have completed all necessary research and informational interviews. You now have full confidence in your “#1 Big Goal”, “#1 Small Goal”, and “#1 Dream Career”.  Congratulations!

I am going to take you through the process of making your 1-10 Year Career Plan.  As guidance, you are going to follow along with a client example-Rose Johnson.  Rose is just beginning her career.  If you are a mid/late career changer this same exact strategy applies.  In the last 15-20 days, you have learned EVERYTHING you need to know in order to complete your career plan. LET’S DO THIS!!

Entry Level Career Examples Working In Your “Big Goal” & “Small Goal”:

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Your “#1 Dream Career” could very well be the first option you listed above.  However, many of you picked a “#1 Dream Career” that is not an entry level position.  For example, let’s say your “#1 Dream Career” is to become a “Lawyer Specializing In Asylum And Refugee Law”.   To become a lawyer you need to first attend law school for 3 years. 

You need to first work in an entry level position

These entry level positions will allow you to:

-Gain valuable experience, develop skills, and start making a difference in solving your “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”

-Make an educated decision concerning the need to develop new work skills/training/certifications, work experience, or graduate school enrollment 

-Further understand and evaluate your “#1 Dream Career”

She will work in a field that has some relation to her “Goal”.  It could be a career that is contained within her “Big Goal” but perhaps not her “Small Goal”.  For example entry level work such as assistant to the CEO, intake personnel, follow up staff, entry level paralegal, case assistant, statistical assistant, survey researcher in a related field such as victim advocacy, immigration law, organizations aiding survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, crime victims, and unaccompanied minors

Gains Made After 1 Year:

Example:
Rose will have gained valuable experience and knowledge through her volunteer work/internship and paying job. She will now have the experience necessary to get full-time employment within her “Big Goal” & “Small Goal” . At this point, she will decide if its necessary to attend graduate school or law school to attain the skills and education necessary to make an important impact in solving her “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”. She may decide that further formal education is not necessary and move forward in a natural career progression. On a year by year basis her goal is to further develop important and valuable skills. Skills and experience that is both valued by society AND necessary to solve her “Big Goal” & “Small Goal”

1-10 YEAR CAREER PLAN

5 YEAR VISION: After 5 years of employment, Rose has developed some real skills and experience that will impact and help solve her “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”.  On a year by year basis Rose is developing important and valuable skills.  Employers value the skills and experience Rose now possesses. Rose now has the ability to demand better working conditions- hours, wage, training, power to implement strategies, etc..  After 5-10 years of employment, Rose may/may not have attained a graduate degree.

In 5-10 years Rose feels she could be: 

1) Jr-mid Level executive within a government agency, non-profit, or private organization working to solve her “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”

2) Attorney in private practice or within a law firm specializing in asylum and refugee law. She is working to solve her “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”

3) Started her own non-profit working to solve her “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”

I want you to think 5 years in the future. Think of the skills and experience you have developed. How you have started to make a difference in solving your “Big Goal” and “Small Goal”.
