FIND YOUR CAREER PURPOSE IN 5 MINUTES
This is a simple YouTube Video to get you thinking about a fulfilling career. The author discusses his 25’th Yale University reunion. His classmates have power, money, and prestige. Yet 80% were unhappy with their lives. The ones that were happy could answer these 5 seemingly simple questions.
Watch the video and answer the 5 questions. Don’t stress about this exercise. Complete it to the best of your ability. I give you two choices in answering the question- present time or in the future. Get in a quiet place and put some time into answering these questions. I provided my personal answers in parenthesis to provide one example.
NOTE: This video is mostly on point. One generalization is not. He alluded to the fact that liberal arts, history, drama majors were more likely to be happier with their lives. I am not in agreement with that. For example, there is absolutely no reason why a business/finance major cannot answer these 5 questions below and have a career he/she loves, adds tremendous value to the world, and pays a good wage. Career happiness is based on having a skill that society values and a compelling career goal. But you already know this

All successful people are “outward” facing. They deliver something (product, service, etc..) that improves others quality of life. They add value to society. By delivering to others the rewards then come back to them. Many people associate this just with the non-profit realm. This is not accurate. This can apply to any career- from business to the social service/non-profit realm.
Bill Gates Vision Of Adding Value:
Microsoft allowed the Internet to transform from a hard to use tool, to an accessible engine that transformed the world. Without that innovation, people in the world would be poorer than they are today. Gates was providing the world a glimpse of the future – where all offices and homes had computers – even though his company, Microsoft, did not make computers at the time and most people saw little need for them. Today, more than 30 years later, computers are commonplace and considered essential work and home tools by the majority of people around the world. Additionally, Microsoft is one of the world’s most successful, respected, and profitable companies
